    Education: 2016 Toledo Electrical JATC Graduate, Currently enrolled at Northwest State Community College pursuing my Associates in Electrical Supervision

    Bio: A proud graduate of the Toledo Electrical JATC, I am a second-generation member of the IBEW, proudly joining the Brotherhood in 2011. With a strong foundation in electrical construction and safety, I have built a well-rounded career in the industry. I previously served on both the JATC and Examining Boards, contributing to the development and oversight of training and industry standards. Now, as the Assistant Training Director of the Toledo Electrical JATC, I am dedicated to preparing the next generation of electricians by fostering excellence in technical skills, safety practices, and professional growth.

    OUR EDUCATORS

    Instructor: James Hamel

    Education: A class of 2012 graduate of the National Training Institute with diplomas as a Master Instructor/trainer from the University of Michigan.

    Bio: 1997 - 2008 Journeyman Installer/Technician for several Local 8 contractors. Eleven years as a field service technician as well as project foreman. Currently a full-time instructor at the Toledo Electrical JATC since 2008; he teaches apprentice classes in Telecommunications and assists the electrical and residential programs. Jim is a BICSI Certified Trainer, and an Avixa Certified Technology Specialist (Audio Visual Technology) as well as an OSHA Outreach Instructor through The National Resource Center/CPWR. 

    Instructor: Patrick Cryan

    Education: Patrick graduated from Perrysburg HS in 2001; US Navy Gas Turbine Systems Technician A School 2003; Toledo Electrical JATC residential apprenticeship graduate of 2006; Toledo Electrical JATC Inside apprenticeship graduate of 2013; Patrick has taken many journeyperson education classes and has furthered his education by attending the National Training Institute from 2014 - 2019 at the University of Michigan. Patrick continues to attend the National Training Institute every summer to renew certifications and further his education. 

    Bio: Patrick is a veteran of the United States Navy. He has been a proud member of IBEW Local 8 for over 13 years. He has worked for several contractors over that time as an apprentice, journeyperson and as a foreman. Patrick is currently working as a full-time instructor at the Toledo Electrical JATC. He instructs the Residential and Inside apprenticeship classes along with a couple of Journeyperson classes including NFPA 70E and Code of Excellence.

    Instructor: Tyler Bergman

    Education: Honors Graduate of Bryan High School, class of 2010. Toledo Electrical JATC inside apprenticeship graduate of 2017, attends National Training institute 2023-current.

    Bio: Born into an IBEW family and a member since 2012, with experience in service as well as project foreman. Part-time instructor and tutor at Toledo Electrical JATC 2018-2023. Currently a full-time instructor teaching both Inside and Residential programs, as well as Journeyman Education courses.

    Instructor: Todd Blair

    Education: Todd is a class of 2000 graduate of Cardinal Stritch High School and a 2004 graduate of the TEJATC VDV apprenticeship. 

    Bio: Todd is a proud member of IBEW Local 8 since June 2000. He has worked for several contractors as a cable puller, apprentice, journeyman, foreman and service technician. Todd is currently working as a full-time instructor at TEJATC since July of 2024, teaching VDV classes and assisting in Residential programs. He is also a certified BICSI instructor. 

    Instructor: Anthony Crawford

    Education: Anthony is a 2006 Maumee High School graduate and a 2019 Toledo Electrical JATC Graduate. He is currently furthering his education at Northwest State Community College, where he is committed to expanding his knowledge and skills. In addition to his formal education, he attends NTI for instructor development training annually.

    Bio: Anthony has been a member of Local 8 since 2014 and has gained valuable experience in the industry as a journeyperson and foreman. Anthony joined the JATC staff in 2021 as a part-time instructor. During that time, he instructed journeyman education courses and provided tutoring. He is currently a full-time instructor for residential and commercial apprentices.

    Instructor: Randall Szalkowski (Retired/Part-Time) 

    Education: 1972 graduate of Macomber Vocational Technical High School in Toledo, Ohio. 
    After high school I continued my education at the University of Toledo and Owens Community College. I entered the IBEW apprenticeship program in 1977 and completed that in 1981. I am a graduate of the National Training Institute (2003). I continue my education by attending NTI every summer. I have taken many classes related to the electrical industry to stay abreast of our trade. I am currently an OSHA 30, 70E, Code of Excellence and current code cycle instructor, along with the curriculum that goes with the ETA apprenticeship program for residential and inside wireman. 

    Bio: I am a member in good standing with Local 8 IBEW going on 48 years. I have worked in the electrical industry for signatory contractors. I started out as a part-time instructor in 1999 and transitioned to a full-time instructor in 2014. I "semi-retired" in 2024, but continue to help with classes at the JATC wherever I am needed.

    Management 

    Committee Member: Michael Deaton 

    Educational History: Graduate of St. John's Jesuit High School an Graduate of Bowling Green State Univeristy - Construction Management 

    Bio: Joined the JATC in 2005 and completed the program in 2009. After the JATC, went into the office at Laibe as an estimator/project manager for 5 years. In 2016 was promoted to Executive Vice President and started to oversee the daily operations. In August of 2017 leadership rolls changed again and I became President. Throughout my years at Laibe, I’ve maintained multiple contractor licenses in 26 states as well as achieving my BICSI RCDD certification.

    Committee Guest: Todd Michealsen 

    Educational History: Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from Ferris State University, Trustee training from the National Training Institute.

    Bio: Chapter Manager of the Ohio/Michigan Chapter National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) since 1995.  Assistant Chapter Manager Minneapolis Chapter 1986 to 1995.  Served close to a decade as a trustee on two separate apprenticeship programs.  Currently serve on advisory boards for Rogers and Start High Schools in the Toledo Public School System.

    Bio: 35 Year Member IBEW Local 8 Journeyman Electrician, Currently serving as Local 8 Business Manager. Served as assistant manager for 5 1/2 Years, Executive Board Member 9 years and Trutee for Health and Welfare for 12 years.
