TEJATC Hosts the 2026 SkillsUSA Northwest Regionals
The Toledo Electrical JATC opened its doors in February to serve as the host site for the SkillsUSA Ohio Northwest Regional competition for Electrical Construction Wiring and Industrial Motor Controls.
The event brought career and technical education students from across the region to the training center for a day of hands-on competition.
The mission of SkillsUSA Ohio is to empower students to become skilled professionals, career-ready leaders and responsible community members. The program strives to improve the quality of America’s skilled workforce through a structured program of citizenship, leadership, employability, technical and professional skills training.
A Full Day of Competition at the Training Center
The northwest regional competition took place on Feb. 13, with orientation at 8:30 a.m., followed immediately by the contest.
Students spent the morning putting their technical skills to the test in front of industry judges, followed by lunch and then an awards presentation to close out the event.
Two Skilled Trades, One Competition Floor
Students competed in two distinct categories that mirror the real-world work regularly performed by TEJATC apprentices and journeymen wiremen
- Electrical Construction Wiring — Contestants worked from electrical blueprints, written specifications and verbal instructions to build a wiring installation that met National Electrical Code (NEC) standards, then completed a written exam covering NEC fundamentals.
- Industrial Motor Control— Working from job sheets and schematic diagrams, competitors selected and installed the wiring methods, devices, and equipment needed to complete an industrial motor control installation, then sat for a written NEC exam of their own.
Competitors arrived with their own hand tools and a typed resume. Contest rules followed the same code-driven expectations they will encounter on a real job site. This meant they followed OSHA safety rules, laid out components to customer specifications and used lockout/tagout equipment throughout.
Top finishers from both competitions qualified to compete at the SkillsUSA Ohio State Championships in May.
