Electrical Apprenticeship Information

Job Description Layout, assemble, install and hook up all electrical apparatus, equipment, fixtures and wiring used in electrical systems on maintenance, renovation, and new construction projects. Possible installation, connecting, and trouble shooting of electrical machinery, control devices, industrial equipment and signal communications systems.

Employer Electrical contractors affiliated with IBEW Local Union 8. Contractors are not necessarily based in the Greater Toledo Area. All job assignments should be viewed as temporary because there is no guarantee of continuous employment. Electricians do not have "seniority or tenure". This is a very independent industry; there is no "employment security".

Working Conditions Physical strength and agility are an absolute necessity for the kinds of work that are performed. You must be willing to work in all types of weather as much of the work is performed outdoors.

Jurisdiction Reliable transportation is an absolute necessity. Local 8's jurisdiction covers 15 counties in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. Fifty plus miles is not an uncommon drive to work. There is no travel compensation.

Training Length of apprenticeship is normally five years. On-the-job training is provided through the Electrical Contractors. Classroom instruction is provided approximately one night a week during the evening.

Wages The rate of pay for apprentices is determined by the collective bargaining agreement between Local 8 and the Contractors. Apprentice pay is based on a predetermined percentage of an Inside Journeyman's pay rate.

Fringe Benefits There is a Health and Welfare plan which is contributed to on your behalf by your employer. After a probationary period, there is a Pension program that is also contributed to, on your behalf, by the employer. There is no paid holidays, sick days, vacations, etcÂ… When you work, you get paid, when you don't work, you are not paid.

Competition During a given selection period, 500 to 800 applications are received. Dependent upon demand, selection and placement of apprentices is limited to between 20 and 50 people.

Cost: You are required to purchase your own hand tools (initial cost: approx. $175.00 - $200.00), work clothes, work shoes, text books and instructional workbooks (approx. $200.00) plus tuition for each semester of school (approx. $200.00/semester).
